Shanklin too strong for Northwood

After so much rain, a game was finally played on Saturday as the 1st XI started their league campaign at home to Shanklin. Despite the sun shining, the pitch was still slightly damp, and the opposition unsurprisingly decided to bowl first to make the most of the wicket. Openers, Nick Heelan and Chris Williams, started off well however and saw the new ball off without too many problems. Williams was first to go in the 14th over though, as he was stumped for 18. Kerry Rice was then caught for just 2 on his league debut, before Ben Duggan was caught for 3. Jeff Barrett was then given out LBW for 0 and Harry Collier was bowled for 5 as Northwood collapsed to 77-5. Captain, Dave Neal, hit two fours and two sixes in a quickfire knock of 25 but was caught with the score on 108. Opener, Nick Heelan was next to go, LBW for a well made 43 off 92 balls to leave the Woodies 117-7. Simon Goldsmith hit a quick 19 off 20 balls before being caught and bowled, ending a 30 run partnership. Andy Ball was caught for 9 and Ashley Goldsmith was bowled for 14 in the final over as late order runs saw the score move on to 165 all out. Nathan Goldsmith was left on 2 not out. The Shanklin chase struggled to start with as Andy Ball clean bowled the opener in the very first over. A Chris Williams run out then reduced Shanklin to 16-2, giving the Woodies a slight advantage. However, the Shanklin batsmen looked comfortable and batted sensibly and calmly. A few chances were put down which added to the frustration of all the Northwood players. Shanklin passed 100 in the 25th over, still for the loss of two wickets. The third wicket did finally come in the 31st over, with the score on 144 as Chris Williams bowled the other Shanklin opener. Ben Duggan then bowled the opposition number five, before an Andy Ball run out and Chris Williams’ second wicket, a catch from Ashley Goldsmith, saw Shanklin on to 160-6. However, the winning runs were bought up with a six to give Shanklin an important victory in the first league game of the season. Williams ended with 2-26, Ball 1-18 and Duggan 1-22.

Simon Goldsmith then picked up two quick wickets however, soon followed by wickets for Ashley and Nathan Goldsmith, leaving Cowes 141-5 and effectively ending any chance of a Cowes victory. Graham Gregory then picked up the sixth wicket before two more for Nathan Goldsmith, Cowes finishing on 280-8. Harry Collier and Daniel Bell then took a wicket each meaning Ventnor needed 71 with just one wicket left. However, the Ventnor number three bought his hundred up and moved Ventnor towards the target. 38 runs were required from 4 overs, but Mark Tuckwell went for 21 in the 37th over. Dan Parker then bowled a tight over to leave Ventnor needing 9 from 2 overs. A Harry Collier over went for seven, meaning just two runs were needed for an unlikely victory.
